  • Promoting Liverpool to the international gospel music industry as a city that creates and celebrates gospel music and showcases the talent of locally based singers and musicians.

What is City Sings Gospel?

City Sings Gospel project (CSG) was created with the support of the Arts Council and Liverpool Culture Company originally with a view of hosting an international festival of gospel music in 2008 and preparing the city to host such an event by developing capacity, interest and talent. The project promotes and develops gospel music and arts in the North West encouraging the community to create gospel choir groups and to support musicians and soloists.

Festivals and Learning how to sing gospel music

Liverpool Lighthouse embarked on an ambitious programme of organising three festivals over three years, a local festival in 2006, featuring predominantly local artists, a highly successful festival in 2007 to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the abolition of slave trade with a clear national focus and dignitaries from Africa, Americas and the UK> The International festival of Gospel music in 2008 brought an international dimension of gospel music and arts to Liverpool, which it is hoped will be a springboard for future festivals in the region.

Since 2004, 30 choirs have been set up with the aid of the City Sings Gospel team based at the UK’s first Urban Arts Centre, Liverpool Lighthouse. Businesses, schools, churches and community groups have formed choirs and gospel groups across the North West from Wigan to the Wirral that have been participating in gospel events in the UK. For many of the participants, this was their first time learning to sing. All their effort and hard work came together in a series of events during the City Sings Gospel 08 International Festival of Gospel Music and the Festival of Hope 08 in June 2008. The biggest festival to date was an exciting contribution to the European Capital of Culture, showcasing the music, the talent and the team spirit of its participants and artistes.
